Role Summary The Microsoft 365 Platform Engineer is responsible for the engineering, configuration, and continuous improvement of Microsoft 365 services in line with enterprise standards and governance. The role focuses on building, operating, and improving the M365 platform rather than end‑user support, training, or security operations. Engineers operate within a globally governed platform model, contributing specialist expertise while working as part of a cohesive M365 product team. Reporting Line Reports to: Senior Manager - Microsoft 365 Platform Role Type Individual Contributor (Engineer) Core Responsibilities Implement and maintain Microsoft 365 configurations aligned to agreed standards. Support release, change, and lifecycle management for M365 services. Proactively identify and eliminate recurring platform issues through automation and standardization. Apply and enforce platform governance policies (retention, permissions, lifecycle). Contribute to documentation of standards, patterns, and operational runbooks. Support audits and reviews relating to M365 usage and configuration. Support migration away from legacy collaboration platforms and file shares. Assist with remediation of technical debt (e.g., legacy workflows, unsupported tools). Contribute to roadmap initiatives defined by the M365 Platform leadership. Work closely with Architecture, Security, IAM, and Regional IT teams. Provide engineering input to platform design and roadmap discussions. Act as a technical escalation point for complex M365 platform issues. Explicitly Out of Scope End‑user training and adoption License management Service desk L1/L2 support Ownership of security tooling (Defender, Sentinel, etc.) Required Experience Strong hands‑on experience with Microsoft 365 in an enterprise environment. Experience operating in governed, large‑scale tenants. Ability to work from standards and architectural direction rather than ad‑hoc configuration. Scripting and automation mindset (PowerShell, Power Automate). Specialist Roles Collaboration & Content Engineer (SharePoint / OneDrive) – SharePoint Online architecture and governance, file share migration and cleanup, information architecture, metadata, lifecycle management. Teams & Meetings Engineer – Microsoft Teams (chat, channels, meetings, policies), meeting rooms, voice integrations, Places / rooms metadata, Teams lifecycle and governance. Power Platform Engineer – Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI (engineering + governance), environment strategy and DLP policy implementation, replacement of legacy tools (Access, SharePoint Designer workflows, Fileshare). Messaging & Information Lifecycle Engineer – Exchange Online, mailbox lifecycle, retention, archiving, shared mailboxes, distribution list vs M365 Groups strategy. Automation & Platform Foundations Engineer – cross‑platform automation (PowerShell, Graph, Power Automate), tenant‑wide hygiene and validation agents, configuration baselines and reporting.
