R&D Software - Satellite & Ground Station Software Senior Security-Focused Software Engineer (f/m/d) Satellogic is a vertically integrated Earth Observation company that designs, manufactures, and operates satellite systems, delivering decision-grade insights at scale to government and commercial customers. Our technology supports a wide range of use cases across climate monitoring, agriculture, energy, infrastructure, defense and intelligence, helping organizations detect change, manage risk, and plan with confidence. Our team is distributed across five countries and brings together expertise in satellite engineering, software development, data science, manufacturing, operations, and go‑to‑market. We value ownership, curiosity, and execution, and we work with humility, honesty, and empathy. About the team The Satellite & Ground Station Software team in our Research & Development group is responsible for design, development, implementation, and maintenance of the software that runs on satellites in space and ground stations. We provide end‑to‑end software development services tailored to the specific needs of satellite subsystem teams, delivering high‑integrity flight software, ground station software, and autonomous frameworks to bridge the gap between hardware components and the broader ecosystem. About the position As a Software Engineer, you will solve complex technical challenges by developing and maintaining the platform applications for hardware‑constrained satellite and ground station systems. You will also play a key role in defining and evolving the satellite’s and ground station core software architecture. Specifically, you will bring a security focus to reinforce our satellite and ground station systems. Your initial priorities will center on security‑related architecture, with scope expanding to encompass all areas of the core platform over time. Location This role operates on a hybrid model. While our primary preference is Buenos Aires, we are open to hiring in Córdoba, Argentina or Montevideo, Uruguay, utilizing our local office hub. Availability to travel to the facility in Uruguay is required. Responsibilities Establish and integrate secure development processes across the engineering team, ensuring security considerations are seamlessly built into daily coding workflows. Define end‑to‑end security practices and guardrails across the entire system lifecycle, using an understanding of the software's attack surface to guide how the team builds software. Design, develop, and validate security‑focused features alongside core flight and ground station software for the satellite and ground station systems. Enhance and maintain existing software by expanding test coverage, improving documentation, and incorporating security checks into the CI/CD pipeline. Collaborate with the software development team, actively contributing to architecture discussions and participating in peer reviews to foster a security‑first mindset. Provide expert‑level support for the satellite operations team. About you Education Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. Experience 4+ years of experience architecting and integrating scalable software solutions. 3+ years of professional experience developing software in Python. 2+ years of experience developing embedded software. Demonstrated experience designing and implementing security‑focused features within complex software systems. Experience with applied cryptography in constrained environments — key management, symmetric/asymmetric encryption, authentication protocols, and certificate handling. Experience establishing or integrating secure development processes (such as Secure SDLC frameworks or security guardrails) within an engineering team. Proven experience in the full software development life cycle (design, coding, testing, documenting and debugging). Proficiency in GNU/Linux for software development. Technical skills Software Architecture: Deep understanding of Design Patterns and System Modeling; expertise in architectural abstraction of multifaceted hardware and software systems. Security: Familiarity with secure coding principles, threat modeling, and identifying software attack surfaces; understanding of fundamental core security concepts such as encryption, authentication, and access control. Languages: Expertise in Python and Bash scripting. Networking: Understanding of TCP/IP, HTTP, and secure communication protocols such as TLS/SSL and SSH. DevOps & Infrastructure: Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated security scanning tools (SAST/DAST), and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes). Version Control: Strong knowledge of Git, version control platforms like GitLab, software packaging, and distribution. Interpersonal skills Excellent communication and problem‑solving skills. Fluent English communication skills, both written and verbal. A strong capacity for continuous learning and a passion for innovation. Valued skills Experience with agile methodologies like Scrum, ideally incorporating security considerations or DevSecOps practices into the sprint lifecycle. Knowledge of GNU/Linux OS process management, privilege separation, and secure inter‑process communication (IPC). Familiarity with low‑level communication protocols such as I2C, RS232, SPI, and CAN. Familiarity with C and secure coding practices for memory‑restricted environments. Familiarity with Python web frameworks (Django) with an understanding of web security best practices (e.g., OWASP) and asynchronous task queues (Celery). Familiarity with databases (Postgres, InfluxDB) and message brokers/queues (Redis, RabbitMQ). Familiarity with AWS cloud infrastructure, cloud security best practices and identity management (IAM). Diversity Commitment Satellogic values diversity and inclusion and is an equal opportunity employer. We are convinced that hiring and developing top talent from around the world for any given discipline will drive innovation, generate new solutions, and deliver a superior product to our global customer base. We work to build an equitable and inclusive environment in which all people, regardless of gender, race, religion, or background, can come together to do their best work. #J-18808-Ljbffr
